How to tame frizzy hair

Frizzy hair is a common hair struggle that many people face! Whether it’s the humidity or heat damage we have all experienced a moment where our hair looks out of control for seemingly no reason at all. If this sounds all too familiar to you and you are wondering how to deal with frizzy hair then keep on reading as our Manchester Hair Salon is here to help giving us their top tips on how to manage frizzy hair.

What is Frizzy hair?

The best way to deal with your uncontrollable mane is first to understand what’s causing the friss in the first place. Our Manchester hair salon explains frizz is the smaller, dryer strands of hair that just won’t stay put. These strands tend to stand up or curl making them stick out from the rest of your hair.

What causes frizzy hair?

One common cause of frizzy hair is humidity and excess moisture in the air. We all know that humidity and heat trigger frizzy hair due to the high levels of hydrogen which cause your hair to frizz. Another common cause of frizzy hair is dryness. When your hair gets dried out it can often become frizzy, this is because once the dry hair is exposed to the moisture it wants to absorb it all resulting in unwanted frizz.

This is also why naturally curly hair tends to frizz more easily since naturally curly hair has a tendency to be dry.

Damaged hair can often become frizzy as it tends to be dry by nature. Bad habits like applying heat to the hair without protection, colouring your hair too often and even over washing it can damage your locks resulting in a frizzier hair. At our Manchester hairdressers heat protector is always applied before any styling service.

Sulfate free shampoo

Ensure the shampoo you are using is sulfate free, sulfates are a common ingredient in shampoo because it creates a lather. However these sulfates strip the natural oil from the hair causing the hair to dry out and frizz. Sulfate free shampoos maintain the hair’s natural oil levels.

Ensure you use conditioner every time you shampoo your hair to keep the cuticle hydrated and smooth. Our Manchester hair salon advise to apply the conditioner from mid lengths to ends, keep it away from your roots to prevent oiliness.

Use a hydrating mask

Keeping the hair hydrated helps to prevent the hair cuticle from opening up, try a hair mask treatment once a week to keep hair hydrated and to reduce damage from styling. If your hair is especially dry then we recommend using a hair mask twice a week to add moisture to your locks.

Expert stylists from our Manchester Hair salon recommend using the Kerastase Discipline range specifically designed for frizzy and unruly hair.

Blow drying

Our Manchester hairdressers share a secret tip – let your hair air dry 90% before blow drying! By letting your hair air dry as much as possible you are letting it dry without disrupting the cuticle which helps to keep it smooth. Using a hair dryer when your hair is already mostly dry minimizes the risk of damage. Just make sure your hair dryer is kept on a low heat setting and not held to close to your hair. Also moving the hair dryer around constantly will help reduce damage as this means sections of hair will not overheat.

Reduce heat styling

Make sure you always use a heat protector when applying heat to achieve your desired style however, you don’t want to over do it. Applying heat to your hair everyday will damage the hair and contribute to more frizz whereas using styling tools a couple of times a week is more likely to help you maintain your healthy locks.

Hair oil

If you’re still struggling with frizz once your hair has been washed and styled then our Manchester hairdressers suggest using a nourishing hair oil. This will smooth out the hair while adding shine at the same time! Use 1-2 drops of your hair oil and run through the ends of your hair to tame flyaways and frizz. A must have is the morrocan oil treatment which can be used as a conditioning, styling and finishing tool. This oil infused treatment completely transforms hair leaving you with nourished, manageable and smooth hair.
